The Northern Busway – why drive when you can Park and Ride?
The Northern Busway is the first dedicated busway in New Zealand. It consists of a public transport network of five busway stations, linked by a 6.2km two-way road for buses running alongside the Northern Motorway from Constellation Drive to Esmonde Road and then continuing in a 2.5km single bus lane to the Auckland Harbour Bridge and into Auckland City.
For the Busway Map click HERE
The two busway stations nearest to Takapuna Beach are the Smales Farm Station (from the north) and the Akoranga Station (from the south over the Harbour Bridge).
There are Park and Ride facilities on the Northern Busway route at the Albany and Constellation stations, with over 350 free car parks at each. This means that if you are coming to work or shop in Takapuna Beach you can avoid parking hassles and parking costs by parking your car at one of these stations, then taking a bus. The bus will travel speedily down the bus-only lane before heading into the Takapuna Beach bus terminus on Lake Road, only a few steps from the Westfield Mall and Hurstmere Road
The Northern Pass is a new kind of ticket you can use for multiple rides, which is valid on all North Shore bus services as far as Albany in the north and Greenhithe in the west. Additionally, you can use it on buses to and from Auckland City, as well as on train services between Britomart and Glen Innes, or Britomart and Newmarket, Ellerslie or Kingsland.
All Northern Busway stations also have bike lockers and bike racks except for Sunnynook which only has bike racks. Lockers require a $2 coin (refundable) to operate them.
All stations have toilets. Monitored CCTV covers the stations and safety points have been installed. Patrols visit and check vehicles in the Park and Ride facilities, which are also monitored by CCTV 24 hours, 7 days.

Across the population, cycling is a growing phenomena, not just as an alternative to the car but for fun and exercise. It's a great way to cover short distances. It has no harmful effect on the environment and does not contribute to road congestion.
Congestion on major roads and motorways in the region has become unacceptable, and providing alternatives to the private car, such as better bus and train services and safe cycle lanes, makes sense.
North Shore City Council is improving cycling facilities across the city to encourage more people to cycle to work or school by increasing their safety, convenience and enjoyment, as well as help them get fit and stay healthy. It is a part of our plan for better transport in the region.
Through a combination of off-road cycle paths and on-road cycle lanes, we are building a network across the city including "green" paths through city parks, to make cycling safer and easier.
Promoting cycling is also an objective for councils under the government's national land transport strategy. Currently, 7000 people in Auckland region bike to school or work every day and the strategy aims to double that figure by the year 2016.
To support cycling we need to create an environment where it is safe and practical. That means considering the needs of cyclists in all roading projects and at all stages of land and transport planning.
On roads, we must provide space to cycle and minimizing conflict between cyclists and other road users by providing well connected, visible, on-road lanes. It also requires other measures in support, such as providing safe lock-up facilities at bus stations and ferry terminals, and encouraging employers to provide showers at workplaces.

Too far to walk? No buses or trains to where you want to go? Why not cycle! You'll get a huge boost to your daily exercise levels, helping you to look and feel great, as well as avoiding traffic congestion and saving money on petrol. For a range of tips and resources about cycling and safety visit www.travelwise.org.nz.
Cycle Maps covering the North Shore, Central, Eastern, Western and Southern Auckland are now available and can be ordered and posted out to you. Each of the roads on the maps have been ridden by a team of experienced cyclists and graded in terms of safety and whether it is a quiet or busy route.
